MANILA — The Manibela group will hold a nationwide transport strike on Tuesday, January 16, to once again call for the scrapping of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.
It is expected that 10,000 to 15,000 will participate in the strike in Metro Manila alone, said Mar Valbuena, chairperson of Manibela.
“We still want to call on the president to restore the revoked franchise of our colleagues,” he said.
“Especially among the operators who are still able to continue our work because of the lack of income it causes to drivers and operators and the lack of rides for the people of the town.”
The group will start the protest in UP Diliman around 10 am and caravan to Welcome Rotonda, then march to Mendiola, Manila.
He said that aside from drivers and operators, commuters and students will also participate in the protest.
In terms of the group, about 30,000 units in NCR have not been consolidated. One of the first steps is consolidation in the implementation of the PUV modernization program.
The group hopes that the Supreme Court will grant the petition for a temporary restraining order against such a program.
